Exploration connects the colony economy to roguelite combat. Official updates describe Star Map events, resource rewards, battle intensity, Transport Hubs, final encounters, and Sector Overlords, but there is no stable public encyclopedia of every map and boss.

Evidence labels

  • Verified behavior is stated in an official page or update.
  • Version snapshot records a number or rule that may change during Early Access.
  • Media observation comes from a named third-party playthrough and is labeled as such.

The exploration loop

Colony to Star Map and back

The official store describes expeditions that gather resources, recruit citizens, trade, and support colony growth. Battles and events build progress toward larger final encounters. A safe loop is:

  1. Stabilize food, production, and critical staffing at base.
  2. Equip the Leader and a squad for the planned objective.
  3. Use Star Map events to gather materials, trade, recruit, and choose battles.
  4. Monitor Expedition Progress, battle intensity, health, ammunition, and storage.
  5. Send valuable resources home where a Transport Hub is available.
  6. Enter the final encounter when the force is ready, or withdraw under the current rule.
  7. Return, process rewards, repair gaps, and prepare the next run.

Progress is a risk decision

An official April update documented intensity changes from white to yellow at 30% Expedition Progress and yellow to red at 60%. Those thresholds are a version snapshot, not a permanent promise. Read the live progress and danger interface.

Preparation

Base checklist before departure

  • Confirm food and essential production will continue without the deployed soldiers.
  • Refill weapon ammunition, grenades, healing supplies, and Capture Rounds if needed.
  • Craft the current revival item and assign a squad able to use it.
  • Leave backpack or expedition-storage room for the objective's rewards.
  • Review soldier roles, health, conditions, and the mission briefing.
  • Save after the base is stable and before committing rare materials.

Star Map objectives and resources

Read event rewards before committing

Official updates say Star-sector events display the resources they can reward. Materials can come from dedicated gathering points and combat rather than purely random drops. Choose nodes based on the shortage waiting at base, not only the nearest icon.

Use Transport Hubs as checkpoints

An official June update added a Star Map Transport Hub that can send backpack materials back to base and adjust deployed soldiers. Where available, use it before a risky chain or final encounter.

Understand sector progression

The April update described three expeditions per sector, rising difficulty across the three runs, and a different final battle at each end. Yellow and red battles advanced Unification Progress faster and granted more Core Fragments in that build. Because this system can be rebalanced, use it to understand the trade-off, not as an evergreen farming formula.

Why this is not a full boss encyclopedia

Official notes repeatedly rework final battles, turret positions, phase count, difficulty, and objectives. A named encounter can remain useful for identification while its exact counter changes. The guide therefore focuses on reading the live objective.

Boss preparation and counters

Read the phase objective first

Official notes mention mechanical legs, weak points, turret positions, attack warnings, and objective indicators. When a boss seems invulnerable:

  1. Stop firing at the main body.
  2. Check the objective text and marker.
  3. Look for weak points, mechanical legs, turrets, support targets, or spawned units.
  4. Reposition the squad away from overlapping warnings.
  5. Resume damage only after the phase target is confirmed.

Keep a retreat threshold

Decide before the final encounter what would make you leave: no revival item, too few surviving soldiers, insufficient ammunition, or a backpack full of rare base materials. The exact threshold is personal; the important point is to choose before the pressure of the fight.

Withdrawal and return

What the official withdrawal note says

A March 2026 official update states that withdrawing terminates the current campaign, does not count as a death, and does not lose collected drops in that build. Because this is version-sensitive, confirm the current withdrawal prompt before relying on it with rare materials.

Process the return in order

  1. Move expedition materials into the correct base storage.
  2. Free temporary captive storage and assign Prison Cells manually where required.
  3. Treat injured soldiers and schedule recovery.
  4. Refill recurring food, ammunition, Capture Round, and revival-item stocks.
  5. Spend research or construction materials only after the supply chain is stable.
  6. Record which objective, enemy, or resource blocked the run before departing again.

Troubleshooting and sources

Common exploration problems

  • Progress does not advance: confirm the active objective and whether the selected node contributes to Expedition or Unification Progress.
  • Materials are at risk: use a Transport Hub where available or withdraw only after reading the current confirmation text.
  • Final encounter will not change phase: follow the objective marker and search for weak points or components.
  • First expedition softlocks: an official July note warned that completing Space Resources tutorial steps out of order could cause a softlock in that build; it recommended restarting the expedition.
  • Battles feel repetitive: the developers have acknowledged this as an Early Access priority, so avoid presenting one current node pattern as the finished design.
